Ultimate Guide on Neural Switchboard In BG3

The Neural Switchboard is a crucial device in Baldur’s Gate 3, allowing you to control the Steel Watchers in the Foundry and progress through the questline.

However, navigating this intricate device and overcoming potential issues require specific knowledge and clear instructions.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the Neural Switchboard, from its function to troubleshooting common malfunctions.

What is the Neural Switchboard?

The Neural Switchboard is a device located in the Necrotic Lab of the Mind Flayer Colony. It plays a vital role in the “The Foundry” quest, where you assist Zanner Toobin in destroying the Mind Flayer facility and rescuing his family.

This device allows you to manipulate the four core functions of a brain: Speed, Emotion, Memory, and Reason.

How to Use the Neural Switchboard

Obtaining the Neural Node: Locate Zanner Toobin’s body in a room opposite the Foundry’s furnace. He carries the Neural Node. Be prepared to fight or sneak past enemies on the way.

Activate the Switchboard: Insert the Neural Node into the socket. This reveals a puzzle where you connect four colored nodes representing Speed, Emotion, Memory, and Reason to their corresponding centers on the other side.

Solving the Puzzle: Ensure no two centers share a node, each needing a unique path. Use the “O” key for a top-down view.

Possible Solution:

  • Connect Speed (red) from the left to the opposite side using the nodes on the top row. However, you must light up the right side’s red center.
  • Connect Emotion (blue) from the left to the opposite side using the nodes on the bottom row. However, light up the blue center on the right side.
  • Connect Memory (green) from the left to the opposite side using the nodes on the middle row. However, light up the green center on the right side.
  • Connect Reason (yellow) from the left to the opposite side using any remaining nodes not occupied by other colors. However, light up the yellow center on the right side.

Checking Your Work: All centers should be lit up if you solved the puzzle correctly. If not, adjust your connections until they all light up.

Successfully solving the Neural Switchboard puzzle opens a secret area with a Mind Flayer statue and a brain. Accessing and erasing the memories of this ancient Illithid queen provides a boost to one of your mental attributes.

Malfunctioning Of Neural Switchboard In BG3

Some players have encountered issues with the Neural Switchboard, preventing them from finishing the quest to disable the Steel Watch. Here are some potential causes and solutions:

1. Zanner Toobin Disappears:

  • He might die or disappear if you long rest after rescuing him or if he encounters enemies or traps.
  • Try using Speak with Dead on his corpse. He will reveal the password: Gond’s name.
  • Find this name in “The Many Faces of Gond” book before the Titan robot fight.

2. Zanner’s Corpse Damaged:

  • If the corpse is too damaged, use Speak with Dead.
  • Alternatively, obtain the password from another source.
  • Rescue Wulbren’s family from the Iron Throne prison to receive a Runepowder Bomb from him.
  • High Charisma persuasion reveals a note with Gond’s name.

3. Bypassing the Switchboard:

  • Solve a brain puzzle in the Necrotic Lab of the Mind Flayer Colony if you can’t get Zanner or Wulbren’s password.
  • This unlocks a door leading to a console that overrides the Switchboard.
  • Follow clues to connect the neural map of a brain.
