Here are a few things you can do to fix the Helldivers 2 Controller not working on a PC.

1. Reboot the PC. After closing the game and Steam, restart your computer. This simple reboot can fix temporary glitches or cache data issues, so try it.

2. Reconnect your Controller/Joystick. Exit Helldivers 2 and close Steam. Turn off your controller. Then, turn it back on and reconnect it to your computer. Finally, relaunch Helldivers 2 to see if the issue persists.

3. Unplug the Mouse/Keyboard or other peripherals. Disconnect all external peripherals from your PC, like the keyboard, mouse, printer, and USB drives.

Reconnect only the essential USB devices to isolate the issue. If the problem resolves, it indicates a problem with the USB device or a previous system glitch.

4. Press the Alt+Enter keys. If your controller disconnects during gameplay or stops being recognized suddenly, press Alt+Enter to exit the game screen. Returning to the game screen afterwards might resolve the issue.

5. Launch Steam in Big Picture Mode. To access Big Picture Mode in Steam, follow the given steps.

  • Open Steam on your PC.
  • Click View in the top-left corner.
  • Choose Big Picture Mode and click Continue if prompted.
  • Navigate to Library and select Games under Browse.
  • Find and choose Helldivers 2.
  • Exit Big Picture Mode and check for the issue again.

6. Switch the Screen Refresh Rate to 60Hz. To resolve this issue, set your monitor’s refresh rate to 60Hz, the recommended setting. Higher refresh rates can cause glitches. Follow these steps.

Adjust your screen refresh rate to 60Hz.

  • Press Win+I to open Windows Settings.
  • Navigate to System > Display.
  • Scroll down and select Advanced Display settings.
  • Choose the 60Hz refresh rate if not already selected. No need to change it if it’s already set to 60Hz.

7. Launch the game in Windowed mode using the Config file. Some players may encounter issues with their gamepad/controller while playing Helldivers 2 on PC. To address this, consider launching the game in Windowed Mode using the config file.

  • Navigate to the Helldivers 2 folder in File Explorer or This PC.
  • Right-click on the Config.ini file and choose to open it with Notepad.
  • In the Config.ini file, locate the [window] mode setting.
  • If it’s set to ‘no’, change it to ‘yes‘.
  • Press Ctrl+S to save the changes.
  • Close the file and check if the issue persists.

8. Enable Steam Overlay. If the controller issue persists, we suggest enabling the Steam overlay for Helldivers 2. Here’s how:

  • Open the Steam client and navigate to Library.
  • Right-click on Helldivers 2 and choose Properties.
  • In the General section, tick the Enable Steam Overlay while in-game checkbox.

9. Configure the Steam General Controller settings. To adjust controller settings in Steam, follow the below steps.

  • Open the Steam client.
  • Click on Steam in the top-left corner, then select Settings.
  • Navigate to Controller and choose General Controller Settings.
  • Depending on your controller type, select PlayStation, Xbox, or Generic Gamepad Configuration Support.
  • Click OK to save changes.
  • Restart Steam and launch Helldivers 2 to apply the settings.

10. Select high performance in Graphics Settings. Opt for high performance in graphics settings for better gameplay.

  • Open the Start menu and search for Graphics Settings.
  • Ensure that the Desktop app is selected, then click Browse.
  • Navigate to the installed Steam folder: Steamapps > Common > Helldivers 2.
  • Select the .exe application named after the game and click Add to include it in the list.
  • Find the game in the list and click Options for Helldivers 2.
  • Choose High Performance.
  • Click Save and try launching the game again to check for the issue.

11. Uncheck Controller in Steam Controller settings. Unchecking controller options in Steam settings can resolve issues where the gamepad isn’t detected or isn’t working properly.

  • Open Steam on your PC.
  • Click on Steam in the top-left corner and select Settings.
  • Navigate to Controller and click on General Controller Settings.
  • Uncheck all controller configuration support options.
  • Click OK to save changes.
  • Restart Steam and try launching Helldivers 2 again.

12. Disable/Enable Steam input. Toggle Steam Input settings in Helldivers 2 properties.

  • Launch Steam, then navigate to your Library.
  • Right-click on Helldivers 2 and choose Properties.
  • In the Properties window, click on Controller.
  • From the dropdown menu labelled Use default settings, opt for Disable Steam Input.
  • If the issue persists, repeat the process and select Enable Steam Input instead.

13. Use Steam input per game settings as forced on or forced off. Adjust Steam Input settings per game in Steam’s Big Picture Mode.

  • Open Steam.
  • Navigate to View > Big Picture Mode.
  • Access your Library and select Helldivers 2.
  • Click on Manage Games (Gear Icon) > Controller Options.
  • Expand the list of Change the Steam Input Per-Game Settings using the down arrow icon.
  • Choose Forced On and click OK to save changes.
  • Restart Steam.
  • If the issue persists, repeat the process, selecting Forced Off this time.
  • Check the controller functionality again.

14. Use DS4Windows. Install the DS4Windows tool and enable the ‘Hide DS4 Controller’ option. Here’s how:

  • Download the DS4Windows tool onto your PC.
  • Install the tool and run the DS4Updater (exe) file from the installation folder.
  • Double-click the file in the directory. If prompted by UAC, click Yes for admin access. This installs the latest DS4Windows app.
  • Open DS4Windows and navigate to the Settings tab.
  • Enable Hide DS4 Controller by clicking on it.
  • Close the interface and check for the issue again.

15. Try using a wired controller. If the previous solutions didn’t work, try connecting a wired or generic controller directly to your PC using a USB cable. Bluetooth connectivity issues between the controller and your PC may be causing the problem.
